Tom's Diner

I am sitting in the morning
At the diner on the corner
I am waiting at the counter
For the man to pour the coffee

And he fills it only halfway
And before I even argue
He is looking out the window
At somebody coming in

"It is always nice to see you"
Says the man behind the counter
To the woman who has come in
She is shaking her umbrella

And I look the other way

And I open up the paper
There's a story of an actor
Who had died while he was drinking
It was no one I had heard of

And looking for the funnies

No she does not really see me

And I'm trying not to notice
That she's hitching up her skirt

湯姆的店

早上，我坐在
街角的餐廳裡
站在櫃台邊
等裡面的人來倒咖啡

他只替我倒了半杯
我才要抗議
他頭已經轉向窗外
看著正走進來的人

「我總是好高興看到妳」
櫃台後面的人
對著剛進來的女的說
這女的還在把傘甩乾

當他們親吻打招呼的時候
我把頭轉開
假裝沒有看到
沒辦法，只好自己倒牛奶

我打開報紙
有個報導說
某個演員喝酒喝到翹／掛了
只是個我沒聽說過的傢伙

於是我翻到星座版
看看有沒有什麼好玩的
突然我覺得有人瞪著我看
所以我抬起頭

窗外有個女的
正朝餐廳裡瞧，她看到我了嗎？
沒有，她不是真的看到我
因為她看到的是自己的倒影

我盡量不要去注意
她正用力把裙頭拉高
當她低頭把絲襪拉直的時候
她的頭髮都淋溼了

哎，看來整個早上
這雨都會下個不停，我聽著
教堂傳來的鐘聲
想念起你的聲音

還有好久好久以前，雨還沒來的時候
我們曾經共度的午夜野餐
我喝掉咖啡
得去趕火車了

這 首歌是蘇珊‧薇格（Suzanne Vega） 在她常去的街角的一家叫做 Tom's Restaurant 的咖啡店用早餐時的隨寫。整首歌其實非常簡單，用一般的口語將捕捉到的一些生活剪影呈現出來。從薇格走進湯姆的店裡等候咖啡開始，許多現代都會單身上班族 走進類似咖啡早餐店時都有的尋常經驗，如店員與熟識客人的親密招呼、窗外對著透明玻璃整理褲襪的女士、腦裡偶然閃過的過往記憶，都在薇格乾淨又有點磁性的 清唱嗓音中，被速寫成了這一首可能是有史以來被翻唱改編最多的一首小品。

薇格在歌曲末尾，早餐結束前，因教堂鐘聲而聯想到了男友的聲音，懷念起「雨還沒有下之前」（二人未分開前）與男友共午夜野 餐的熱戀情景。此時看到眼前溼答 答依舊不斷落下的雨，不免心生怨意。這裡的抱怨，其實同時也可能是對於又要趕車去開始一天忙碌生活時的一份「早晨憂鬱」（morning blue），外頭的雨只是適時的成為她宣洩心情的代罪羔羊。..................................
